In today’s blog: ‘Design the future’, a workshop based on a combination of future scenario planning and TUDelft’s vip approach.

A sneak preview of what the future may hold.
In order to remain relevant and successful in the future, businesses should try to take into account what the future might bring for them and whether they should change their business. Understanding what is happening and what might happen can help to get a better idea of the future, or different scenarios of the future. This half a day workshop let’s you reflect on trends, helps you understand underlying needs that drive behaviour and helps you to translate these needs into a future context.
It is vital that this future scenarios workshop is done in a multidisciplinary team, where there is room for discussion.
Workshop preparation (30 min)
Print the Product understanding & defining template. Download here.
Post-its, pencils, markers, glue/tape, blank paper.
Ask all team members to think about your brand & offering, and trends & developments.
1. Homework review & discussion (60 min)
Everyone in the group explains their homework: tell each other what the brand means and what it is about. What is the offering, the context, use, interaction, competition, etc.?
2. Understand and define the offering (60 min)
Try to come to a common understanding of what the core of the offering and business is about. And what customer needs does the product fulfill?
3. Trends and developments (60 min)
Use desktop research to find relevant trends and developments. Shoot 10-second ideas to enhance creativity and come with first ideas. Now decide on two main trend-pairs and formulate their extremes.
4. Scenario probabilities (30 min)
Use the 2 most important trend pairs to plot their extremes on two axis, yielding 4 possible scenarios with different probabilities. Discuss them and pick the one (or more) that is (/are) the most realistic.
5. Design the future! (60 min)
Try to fulfill the needs of the future by use of the trends and developments, without looking at the current offering. What does the future look like?
